about

“Pongo, vol. 1” is a body of work intended to showcase what Chore Boy has known for years - that he is one of the best rappers currently making music in Chicago, period. After several years of dizzying prolificacy and tenacious displays of freestyle ability & live performance prowess, Chore Boy holed up in Second Bedroom Studio for a number of months to craft his most comprehensive & accessible body of work to date. With longtime collaborator Brad Kemp (Executive Producer) at his side, Chores created about 45 songs for the project before narrowing it down to the 15 that would ultimately compromise “Pongo.”

The process has not been a painless one. It began last June when Chore Boy quit his job - without any semblance of a safety net - to dedicate himself to rap full-time. In the subsequent months, Chores has pushed himself to the brink of homelessness (an end-of-March eviction looms with limited prospects), maxed out five credit cards, and alienated the lion’s share of lambs once firmly in his flock - all with a singular goal in mind. A light at the end of the tunnel; a train on time; “Pongo, vol. 1.”

Notable anecdotes from the album’s creation include a last-minute red-eye flight to NYC the week before release to secure the project’s final feature - Chris Redd on “Dreamin’ ‘Bout;” intercepting beats intended for frequent collaborators Glitter Moneyyy & Vagabond Maurice that would ultimately become “Red Hat” & “That Guy F*cks;” and cheffing recent single “Stay On” from scratch with Kemp & Ano Ba in 30 minutes’ time.

“Pongo, vol. 1” has been a long time coming. In many ways, it is Chore Boy’s debut hip-hop album as a solo artist - and a definitive step into new territory for one of Chicago’s most promising talents.
