Surrealistic Brillo is Chore Boy & Brad Kemp’s fifth project since the top of 2019 - but this one feels different. Crafted over a few hours of Zoom sessions and a flurry of Dropbox files, the longtime collaborators brought their latest effort to life in short order despite a pandemic and a thousand miles’ separation. With Kemp’s Chicago studio closed as precaution and Chores temporarily anchored on the East Coast with family, the duo changed things up - both in approach and in attitude.

The backdrop for this tape’s creation needs no introduction - a world on fire; a constrained & anxious day-to-day staged in palpable uncertainty and heightened urgency. Fittingly, perhaps, Brillo finds Chore Boy somewhat fixated on matters of mortality. Death looms large on the project, and Brad’s minimalist approach to production this go-around leaves plenty of room for things to unfold in strange & intriguing ways. Typically a pair of perfectionists, Chores and Kemp didn’t want to overthink things this time. Brad’s beats feel spacious and elegant; Chore Boy’s raps indulgent & unruly. No features, no programmed drums, no bells & whistles. The result is a new sound for the two artists; rooted in their strengths, revealing their growth.
